DESCRIPTION

When you first start playing The Baby In Yellow you might think, “How hard can it be to take care of a little baby?” But within five minutes you'll realize that there's nothing normal about this baby. Its eyes are weird, its behavior is strange, and it occasionally moves in the air, while you, as the nanny, are trapped in a house full of spooky atmosphere, trying not to be scared to death while completing the care tasks.

The game is played from a first-person perspective, with a cartoonish style that is not hyper-realistic, but rather “cute with a touch of creepy”. The baby looks fleshy, wears a yellow onesie, and is quite normal at first, but soon you'll realize that it will occasionally make some wrong giggling noises, or suddenly disappear after you turn around, and then turn around and stand in the corner staring at you - that “inexplicable uneasiness” comes up immediately. The “inexplicable sense of unease” immediately came up.

Play is actually very simple, is to do some “nanny routine”: feeding, changing diapers, put the baby to sleep, pick up his toys thrown everywhere. Sounds pretty ordinary, right? But it doesn't leave you in peace. You could be about to feed him and he whooshes up to the kitchen ceiling, or you could be putting him to bed and the next thing you know he's sitting and floating in the air. The game designers clearly know how to put people under pressure, and each mission feels like it's leading you into an increasingly bizarre abyss.

The funniest thing is that even though it's a horror game, you'll often be amused by its “netherworld humor”. For example, you're about to change your baby's diaper when you look down and realize he's gone. Then you turn around and find him in the washing machine, sitting upright and looking at you with a “I'm sitting here, what can you do about it? The whole game has this kind of “laughing and scared” rhythm, and it's very easy to stop playing.

The game's sound effects are also a big plus. The background music is usually a subtle but depressing melody that creates an eerie and peaceful atmosphere, but whenever the baby does something unreasonable, the music will immediately become harsh or eerie, making you tense up immediately. Combined with the occasional whispers, wind, and the sound of a door closing on its own, this sound design is really carrying, and it's especially immersive when played with headphones on.

Also, The Baby In Yellow isn't just a mere jump scare, it has some hidden plot threads behind it. For example, you'll find mysterious books, strange graffiti and symbols, and items that seem to be related to demonic rituals in the room. As the game progresses, you'll slowly piece together that the baby may not be human at all, and that there is some sort of supernatural force behind it, even a Cthulhu element like the “King in Yellow”. This feeling of “the more you play, the more wrong you feel” is what makes the game particularly appealing.

Although the game doesn't last long - about 20 to 30 minutes a game - it's constantly being updated with new chapters or special editions for holidays like Halloween and Christmas, with more puzzles, chases, and plot extensions. You can even pick up strange “souls” in the game to unlock new skills, such as teleportation, anti-gravity, and dark energy, which seems pretty middle-of-the-road, but it's really cool to use against that creepy baby.

The Baby In Yellow is a great game for those who want a bit of horror but don't want it to be too heavy. It doesn't rely on gore or violence for its horror, but rather uses “implausible routines” coupled with a “supernatural” setting to switch back and forth between lightheartedness and unease. If you're the kind of gamer who wants excitement but doesn't want to get a heart attack, this game is a great choice. As I joked with a friend, “Don't underestimate the baby in yellow, it's your biggest fear tonight.”
